Custom Dashboards: Charts You Want to See (YARN)

To avoid repeatedly setting up groups of charts you often want to see—logically related metrics and dimensions; drilldowns from a given chart; or selecting a chart and, based on its contents, viewing another chart—you can create custom dashboards: combinations of charts you can see anytime, and drill-down for any given time interval or range.

With only one exception, the charts that are in custom dashboards are identical to the “regular” charts, and you can zoom the time, turn series’ members on and off, export as data or PNG, and so on. The only function that is not applicable to charts in custom dashboards is changing the number and granularity of results.

Custom Dashboards are available only for YARN clusters.

Show a Custom Dashboard

You can access Custom Dashboards from the dashboard navigation bar.

Procedure

  • At the top of the Pepperdata dashboard or any custom dashboard display, click the name of the dashboard you want to see.

Create a Custom Dashboard

You can create a new custom dashboard anytime, and include any charts that you want, for any time period.

Procedure

  1. In the Dashboard Bar, click New Dashboard.

If there is no Dashboard Bar, that means that you are a restricted user who does not have access to other users’ custom dashboards. In this case, use the left-nav menu to select Dashboards > New Dashboard.

  2. In the resulting Create New Dashboard pane:

    1. Enter a name.

    2. (Optional) Select Copy From Existing Dashboard (and from the Source Dashboard list, choose the source).

    3. If you do not want other people to see your custom dashboard, clear the Share This Dashboard option. (After you create the dashboard, you cannot change whether or not it’s shared.)

  3. Click Create Dashboard.

  4. Add charts by editing the custom dashboard.

Edit a Custom Dashboard

You can edit a custom dashboard anytime. Your edits affect the dashboard for all users, not just your view of the dashboard.

Procedure

  1. From the Dashboard Bar, click the dashboard’s name.

  2. In the top-right, click the Edit icon (edit Edit).

  3. To add a chart, click add_circle Add New Chart.

  4. In the resulting Add Chart wizard:

    1. Select a metric (you cannot select more than one metric, nor an entire metrics group); click Next.

    2. In Group By, select which dimensions to show and/or filter; click Next.

    3. Select a Panel Size; and click Save.

Repeat steps 3–4 for as many charts as you want.

  5. To edit or delete a chart or to change its type (), use the controls in the chart’s title.

  6. At the top-right, click save Save

Delete a Custom Dashboard

To avoid a long list of custom dashboards that are difficult to navigate, and that is likely to include stale dashboards that nobody needs anymore, it’s a good practice to delete custom dashboards that you set up to investigate a system issue that’s been fixed, to validate a now-operational change, and so on.

Procedure

  • Show the dashboard, and in the top-right, click delete Delete.
